Flies for the Laguna Madre

The Lower Laguna Madre of south Texas abounds with large numbers of inshore fly fishing targets.  Just as plentiful are the flies that are used to catch them.  Local guides and fly fishers have developed flies that are used specifically to catch redfish, spotted seatrout, snook, crevalle jacks, tarpon, and many other species under different conditions and times of the year in these waters.

The purpose of this page is to bring to the traveler and fly fisher who desires to pursue the piscine quarry of the lower Laguna Madre the knowledge of the flies used. We'll seek the advice and recommendations of our local guides and fly fishers for patterns that work at different times of the year, but specifically focus on what is working at the moment.

One fly that every fly fisher must have in their fly box is the deep clouser minnow in chartreuse and white.  Bob Clouser developed this fly for small mouth bass, but seatrout and redfish readily take it.  This fly has probably caught more different species around the world than any other fly.  It's easy to tie and cast. It can be tied in a variety of patterns to seduce redfish, sheepshead, black drum, flounder, and entice the strike of a trophy spotted seatrout.

That said, local fly fishers have developed flies that catch south Texas inshore species consistently when others don't. The articles to follow will provide for recommendations for you to use when you venture into our waters.
